Curated by: Sanne Kofod Olsen

Curator, Sanne Kofod Olsen, recalls the exhibition in the following anecdote published in O - Overgadens anniversary book: Overgaden 1986-2011 (2011):

"When Copenhagen was European Capital of Culture in 1996, the art historian Tone Olaf Nielsen, the artist Susan Hinnum and I were each invited to curate an exhibition spread over the two floors of Overgaden. Together with the invitation from the board of Overgaden came a modest, but decent amount of money with which to organise the exhibitions.

The exhibition was my third curatorial project. My first, created with Simon Sheikh, had taken place the previous year at Nikolaj Copenhagen Contemporary Art Centre, with the title I Confess, and along with the artists Susan Hinnum and Malene Landgreen I was working on the Internet project Inserts – 64 kvindelige kunstnere i Danmark (Inserts – 64 Women Artists in Denmark), which was published the following year on the website Artnode.dk. The exhibition at Overgaden was entitled Between You and Me, and it was the first exhibition that I curated entirely on my own. The concept for Between You and Me was based on a conceptual dissemination of contemporary works. The exhibition consisted of sculpture, installations and social and performance works, and basically the overall theme was how a work of art comprises a communication between the artist and the viewer. What is between you and me.

The artists included in the exhibition were Tommy Støckel, Maria Karlsson, Henriette Heise, Lars Bent Petersen, Elmgreen & Dragset, Suzette Gemzøe and Susan Hinnum. At the time, in 1996, we were all relatively young. It was Elmgreen & Dragset’s second exhibition as an artist duo, while the other artists had exhibited at various self-run and artist-run galleries and participated in exhibitions about emerging trends in Danish art. It was an important time for us all in terms of finding exhibition opportunities – an experimental phase, in which you go from being young and untried to having a little experience.

Overgaden was, and is, an ideal place for artists and curators to test themselves, especially if you work outside the conventional art field, which in Denmark is controlled by a narrow art market. Overgaden has to some extent functioned at a level somewhere between the underground and institutional officialdom, and thus it provides an important and necessary portal for artists and independent curators hoping to establish themselves in the art world. In the twenty-five years it has been in existence, the place has always been run with a high level of artistic professionalism and versatility, it has been experimental, and in recent years also international. As an institution, Overgaden is quite unique, because for many artists it has been and continues to be a stepping-stone to future success."
