Overgaden Institution of Contemporary Art was established in 1986 and with 32 years of exhibitions and artistic activities wearing on the building, the iconic spaces needed a lift. A generous 5.1 million DKK donation from Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansens Fond made this significant update of the exhibition and visitor facilities possible. Thanks to their donation, Overgaden’s 19th-century industrial building has been brought up to a 2020-standard, securing Overgaden as a home for many contemporary art exhibitions in the future.

Director Merete Jankowski says about the renovated Overgaden: “The characteristic spaces of Overgaden have a special place in contemporary Danish art history. With the renovation of Overgaden, we wanted to find the balance between maintaining our beautiful, historical building and ensuring that we, as an art space, are able to provide a good and safe frame for the art and visitors for many more years to come.”

The renovations have been ongoing from August to December 2019 and were managed by Christoffer Harlang Architects.

On the reopening day, Overgaden welcomes the total installation OUTLET by Torben Ribe and the exhibition The Unnamed by Johannes Sivertsen.
