On Thursday 16 June, exhibiting artist Liesel Burisch met Dr. Justin Hunt, researcher in queerness and queer activism, for a conversation, which is now available as a sound file and transcription at O—Overgaden’s online platform.
Dive into their conversation between academia and lived experience, on the “gaze of friendship” and dream collaborators turned friends, laying the ground of Liesel Burisch’s work, offering anecdotes from private COVID parties, on gender fluid performance and the way all of us are always performing (are we ever truly free to chill, even at parties?), and spaces where we start thinking about what we want to be free to do, instead of what we want to be free from experiencing.
By sharing this talk (as well as the new publication about Liesel Burisch, also available online via O—Overgaden’s online platform), we hope to fan the flames of the important conversations raised by this exhibition.
The artist talk is based on Burisch’s current solo exhibition Bring Time, which over the summer will transform O—Overgaden’s ground floor into a total installation with mesmerizing beats, seductive videos from the queer party scene, and manifestos that deal with an inclusive club culture. By exploring the transition between the world outside and inside the club as a threshold between normalized society and marginalized subcultures, Burisch questions the transience, inclusion, and archiving of club cultures. What can we learn at the border between clubs and the rest of society? And how do we incorporate the fragile, temporary space of opportunity that the party community is able to give us into the rest of our lives?
