Seminar on Linguistic Isolation and Nonverbal Communication ~ at O—Overgaden and online

In the first panel discussion, Anna Balch, a welfare advisor at Christianshavns Gymnasium; Vickie Mølgaard-Madsen; visual artist Marie Kølbæk Iversen; and curator Anne Kølbæk Iversen will share their experiences of living with acquired hearing loss and deafness in a hearing world. The discussion will center on the coping strategies involved in managing hearing “loss,” including a shift in perspective from a narrative of loss toward a focus on “deaf gain” and an orientation toward sign language and Deaf culture as an alternative to the treatment and hearing technology aids that are the first choice in the Danish healthcare system.

In the second conversation, visual artist Lise Tovesdatter Skou and associate professor and founder of (art re.search) Sidsel Nelund present tactile works that form part of Skou’s investigations into autism as an expression of a relational ecology. In her practice-based Ph.D. project at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design, Skou examines how so-called neuronormative forms of communication help to perpetuate specific, capitalist, and Western notions of humanity, as well as binary understandings of ability and disability. Through an affective-relational autoethnographic method based on her own experiences, she explores how these categories can be challenged through processual and interwoven relationships.
