Artist's book festival
One Thousand Books 2023

Join the Bindle artist’s book tour from O—Overgaden to local bookshops

Where do you shop for artists’ books locally?

Books are quite easy to distribute but someone still has to do it. For 10 years, One Thousand Books festival has helped spread the word about artists’ books. Now the time has come to take a look at the spaces where they actually change hands—the bookshops. Often run by publishers or artists themselves, spaces for artists’ books play a vital role in selecting, distributing, and communicating these artworks. In 2023, O—Overgaden will host One Thousand Books on 1–3 December. From its base at O—Overgaden, One Thousand Books will be handing out a map of local, specialist bookshops and will host a guided tour. As an enticement to visit your local bookshop, One Thousand Books will make a limited edition of bindles—a wooden stick and a piece of fabric, perfect for carrying a stack of books—and a silkscreen printed map of artists’ books spaces near you. Furthermore, at O—Overgaden, two visiting European artists’ bookshops will each exhibit their take on how to create a space for artists’ books, while O—Overgaden will also be the start and ending point of a tour around Copenhagen visiting spaces that do book-shopping in very different ways.

Biography

One Thousand Books is a series of experimental art book events in Denmark celebrating the art publishing scene to the Danish and international public. So far, there have been five iterations of the festival, each investigating different aspects of the scene. One Thousand Books aims to showcase art publishing as an accessible yet complex creative practice and to serve as a platform where actors in the field of bookmaking can connect and share ideas and perspectives on current issues in the frame of editing, printing, disseminating, and exhibiting books. Taking place in 2023 at O—Overgaden, this brings focus back to Overgaden Neden Vandet 17’s former use as CENTRALTRYKKERIET, and is prompted, in part, by O—Overgaden’s current hosting of Wilfred Wagner’s independent publishing house Adagio for Things.
